You don't need special equipment to check pavement safety — your own hand works well.
Place the back of your hand (more sensitive than your palm) flat on the pavement and hold it there. If it becomes uncomfortable before 7 seconds pass, it's too hot for paw pads.
Test right before your usual walk time, since pavement temperature can swing significantly within a couple of hours as the sun moves.
Asphalt tends to run hottest, concrete slightly less, and grass or dirt stays noticeably cooler — factor surface type into your route choice.
